Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan
Given the colonial context of this country, reconciliation requires all people in Canada – First Nations, Inuit, Métis and non-Indigenous – to create change. This work involves awareness, acknowledgement, atonement and action by non-Indigenous governments, institutions, organizations and individuals – including Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC).

HEC is continuously learning how to do the work of reconciliation, guided by the leadership of First Nations, Inuit and Métis partners and advisors. We are committed to addressing racism and supporting cultural safety and humility in the healthcare system and enhancing its capacity to meet the needs and priorities of First Nations, Inuit and Métis.
These commitments require us – as HEC staff, leadership and Board of Directors – to build our internal capacity and ensure HEC’s policies, processes and ways of working support truth and reconciliation.
Our Truth and Reconciliation Action Plan provides a roadmap for the work HEC will undertake over the next four years to live up to our commitments and continue developing our ability to help shape a future where everyone in Canada has safe and high-quality healthcare.
This plan was developed by and for staff, leadership and the Board of Directors at HEC, with guidance from First Nations, Inuit and Métis partners and advisors. It was informed by a review of foundational reconciliation documents like the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Final Report and Calls to Action, as well as the reconciliation commitments and plans of other non-Indigenous organizations.
We are incredibly grateful to the First Nations, Inuit and Métis individuals and organizations we work alongside for sharing their leadership, wisdom, stories and patience with us and others in Canada who are on this journey of reconciliation. We can and will do better. Together.
